Slab Collapse : A routine evening tuition class in Navi Mumbai turned into a heartbreaking tragedy after a portion of a building slab suddenly collapsed in Koparkhairane, claiming the life of a young student and leaving several others injured.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening in Sector 2 of Koparkhairane, where a private tuition class was being conducted inside a residential building. At the time of the accident, multiple students were present in the room attending the class when the slab from the floor above suddenly gave way and crashed down onto the classroom.
According to initial information, around 11 to 12 students were attending the tuition session when the structure collapsed. The sudden crash caused panic among the children as debris from the slab fell inside the room.
Student Succumbs to Injuries
In the tragic incident, a 14-year-old student lost his life after sustaining serious head injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries. Several other students were injured in the accident and were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals for medical care.
Doctors treating the injured students have confirmed that most of them suffered minor to moderate injuries and are currently under observation.
Quick Rescue Operation by Emergency Teams
Soon after the incident was reported, fire brigade teams from Vashi, Airoli and Koparkhairane rushed to the spot and began rescue operations. Emergency responders worked quickly to remove debris and rescue the trapped students and teacher from inside the damaged room.
The rescue operation continued for some time as officials ensured that no one remained trapped under the rubble. Local residents also gathered at the scene and assisted authorities during the emergency response.
Old Building Under Investigation
Authorities stated that the accident occurred inside a residential building that was constructed several years ago. Officials from the civic administration have begun an investigation to determine the exact cause of the slab collapse.
Preliminary information suggests that the structure may have weakened over time, though a detailed structural audit has been ordered to confirm the reason behind the failure.
As a precautionary measure, residents of the building were temporarily evacuated while engineers inspect the safety of the structure.
Fear and Concern Among Parents
The incident has left parents and local residents deeply shocked. Tuition classes are a common part of daily life for students in Navi Mumbai, and such an accident has raised serious concerns about building safety and structural maintenance in residential societies.
Many parents in the area have demanded stricter inspection of older buildings where coaching classes or educational activities are conducted.
