Mumbai: The ambitious Dharavi redevelopment project has taken a new turn with the introduction of a revised housing and land allocation plan. The updated strategy promises larger tenements, a fair 50-50 land split between commercial and residential zones, and improved living facilities for residents.

Under the new model, eligible residents will receive bigger homes compared to the earlier proposal, addressing long-standing concerns about cramped spaces in one of Asia’s largest slum clusters. The revamped blueprint also focuses on creating modern infrastructure, open spaces, and better connectivity within the redeveloped zone.

The 50-50 land split means half the redeveloped area will be allocated to residential housing for rehabilitated families, while the remaining half will be reserved for commercial and mixed-use developments. This is expected to generate economic opportunities for both locals and investors while keeping community needs at the forefront.

Authorities have stated that the new approach will prioritise faster rehabilitation, sustainable building practices, and upgraded public amenities such as healthcare centres, schools, and markets.

The Dharavi redevelopment project, which has been in the works for years, is now poised to move forward with increased acceptance from stakeholders. If executed as planned, it could transform Dharavi into a modern, self-sufficient urban hub while retaining its cultural and economic vibrancy.
