Mumbai Onion Prices Double to ₹60-70 Per Kg
SHARE

Mumbai [India], September 11: Onion prices have surged sharply across Mumbai, with retail rates reaching ₹60–70 per kg, nearly doubling over the past month. The sudden increase has put additional pressure on household budgets and is being attributed primarily to lower arrivals from major onion-producing regions of Maharashtra.

The price rise comes at a time when demand for onions remains steady, while supplies from key growing belts including Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Pune and Solapur have declined. Traders expect prices to remain elevated in the short term, although rates could soften once supplies from other states improve.

Mumbai Onion Price Reaches ₹60–70 Per Kg

In Mumbai’s retail markets, good-quality onions are currently being sold for around ₹60 to ₹70 per kg. The increase has been particularly noticeable over the past month, with retail prices rising by nearly ₹10 during this period.

Wholesale prices have also moved upward. Good-quality onions in Mumbai are reportedly selling at around ₹52 per kg, while lower-quality produce is available for approximately ₹40 per kg.

The gap between wholesale and retail prices reflects transportation, handling and other market-related costs before the produce reaches consumers.

Nashik Supply Drops Sharply

Nashik is one of India’s most important onion-producing regions, and changes in arrivals there have a direct impact on prices across Maharashtra.

At Lasalgaon APMC, one of the country’s largest onion markets, arrivals have fallen to around 9,000 quintals, nearly 50% below normal levels. Good-quality onions are selling at around ₹55 per kg at the wholesale market, while lower-quality onions are fetching approximately ₹45 per kg.

Reduced arrivals have consequently pushed up wholesale prices, which are then reflected in retail markets in Mumbai and other cities.

Why Are Onion Prices Rising?

The current price surge is largely linked to a temporary supply shortage.

Major factors include:

  • Lower arrivals from Maharashtra’s major onion-growing belts
  • Delays affecting the upcoming kharif crop
  • Farmers holding back some stocks in anticipation of higher prices
  • Lower availability of fresh onions in wholesale markets
  • Weather-related uncertainty affecting production

Maharashtra accounts for a significant share of India’s onion production, meaning any disruption in its supply chain can quickly affect prices across the country.

The delayed monsoon has also raised concerns about the next kharif crop. Farmers and traders are closely watching rainfall and crop development to assess how much supply will reach the markets in the coming months.

Will Onion Prices Rise Further?

There are concerns that onion prices could remain high or increase further before the situation improves.

Trade sources have indicated that prices may stay elevated until fresh supplies from other producing states begin reaching the markets. However, Lasalgaon APMC chairman D K Jagtap expects prices to ease within about a month as supplies from Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka increase.

The next few weeks will therefore be important for determining whether the current price spike is temporary or develops into a longer period of high onion prices.

The late kharif crop is another key factor. According to onion growers’ representatives, October could provide a clearer picture of the production outlook for the late kharif season.

Government Selling Buffer Stock at ₹35 Per Kg

The Centre has already taken steps to control the rise in onion prices by releasing onions from its buffer stock at a subsidised rate of ₹35 per kg.

However, the intervention has so far not been enough to bring down the overall market price significantly. The average retail onion price across India rose from ₹48.50 per kg when the government intervention began on August 28 to ₹50.79 per kg subsequently.

According to government price-monitoring data, the national average retail onion price had reached ₹52.66 per kg, representing a roughly 90% increase compared with the same period a year earlier.

The government is expected to continue releasing buffer stock while monitoring market conditions.

What This Means for Mumbai Households

For consumers, the sharp rise means onions are once again becoming a significant part of the monthly grocery bill.

The increase is particularly noticeable because onions are a staple ingredient in everyday Indian cooking. A sustained rise could add to overall food inflation if prices of other essential commodities also remain elevated.

For now, consumers may see some relief once arrivals from neighbouring states improve. But if Maharashtra’s next crop is affected by delayed rainfall or lower acreage, the pressure on prices could continue.

When Could Prices Come Down?

Market participants are cautiously optimistic that prices could ease within the next month if supplies from Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and other producing regions increase.

The arrival of the next major crop will ultimately determine the direction of prices. Until then, Mumbai consumers may have to continue paying significantly more than they did a few weeks ago.

With retail onion prices now touching ₹60–70 per kg, all eyes are on October’s crop outlook and fresh arrivals. If supplies improve, prices could gradually come down; otherwise, consumers may face another spell of expensive onions.
