In a major infrastructure boost for Maharashtra, the much-awaited Mumbai–Pune Expressway Missing Link project has finally opened to the public, promising faster, safer, and smoother travel between the two cities.

The project, spanning around 13.3 km, is designed to bypass the old ghat section of the expressway, which was known for heavy traffic congestion, sharp turns, and frequent accidents. With the new route now operational, commuters can expect a reduction of nearly 20–30 minutes in travel time.

This newly built stretch includes advanced engineering features like long tunnels, high bridges, and a cable-stayed structure, making it one of the most modern highway developments in India. The aim is not just speed, but also improved safety and reliability for daily commuters and long-distance travelers.

The Missing Link has been developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and officially opened on May 1, 2026, marking Maharashtra Day with a major milestone in infrastructure.

What is the Missing Link?

The Missing Link is a newly constructed alternative route on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway that bypasses the old and risky ghat section.

Earlier, vehicles had to pass through a 19 km-long hilly stretch, which caused delays and accidents. Now, this new 13.3 km route replaces that difficult section with a faster and smoother drive.

Why is it called “Missing Link”?

The name “Missing Link” comes from the fact that this section was the only incomplete or inefficient part of the expressway.

  • The expressway was already functional
  • But the ghat section created a “gap” in speed and safety
  • This new route fills that gap

So, it was literally the “missing piece” of the expressway, now completed.

When did the Missing Link start?

  • The idea of this project was first discussed years ago due to traffic issues in the ghat section
  • Construction began after approvals and planning by MSRDC
  • The project was officially inaugurated and opened on May 1, 2026

Why this project is important

This project is being called a game-changer because:

  • 🚗 Travel time reduced by up to 30 minutes
  • 🛣️ Distance reduced by around 6 km
  • ⚠️ Fewer accidents compared to old ghat road
  • 📈 Boost to tourism & business between Mumbai–Pune

It is expected to significantly improve daily commuting as well as weekend travel to destinations like Lonavala and Pune.

Mumbai–Pune Missing Link

The Mumbai–Pune Missing Link is more than just a road — it represents a new era of faster, safer, and smarter connectivity in Maharashtra.

With modern tunnels, reduced travel time, and better safety, this project is set to transform how people travel between two of India’s busiest cities.
