Mumbai, August 21: The city of Mumbai once again came to a standstill on Monday as heavy rains lashed multiple parts, causing severe waterlogging and traffic snarls. Continuous rainfall since the early hours has affected road and rail connectivity, leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

Several low-lying areas including Dadar, Sion, Kurla, Andheri, and Chembur reported knee-deep water, with vehicles struggling to move. The situation was no different in the suburbs, where key roads such as the Western Express Highway and Eastern Express Highway witnessed long traffic jams due to water accumulation.

Local Train Services Delayed

Local trains, considered Mumbai’s lifeline, were also impacted. Suburban services on the Central and Western Railway lines faced delays ranging from 15 to 25 minutes. Harbour line trains, especially near Kurla and Vashi, slowed down due to waterlogged tracks.

BMC Issues Advisory

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued an advisory asking residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors if possible. Civic authorities have deployed pumping machines in flood-prone zones to drain out water.

Commuters Face Inconvenience

Office-goers and students faced a tough morning as buses and auto-rickshaws either refused passengers or charged extra due to rising water levels. “It took me two hours to reach Lower Parel from Thane, a journey that usually takes 45 minutes,” said a commuter stuck in traffic.

Weather Department Forecast

According to the IMD (India Meteorological Department), heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue in Mumbai and adjoining areas including Thane, Navi Mumbai, and MMR for the next 24 hours. Residents have been urged to stay cautious.
