For the past several days, supply has decreased, and the number of trucks arriving at the market has been about 90–95, which is insufficient to meet demand. onion

The severe rains in July hampered onion availability, and prices have begun to rise. In the previous week, the wholesale price of onions had risen by roughly 15%, and the retail price had also begun to rise.

Supply shortage

Normally, the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Vashi receives roughly 120 trucks filled with onions every day. For the past several days, supply has decreased, and the number of trucks arriving at the market has been about 90–95, which is insufficient to fulfill the demand. The Vashi APMC distributes critical goods to the MMR area, and a drop in supply influences their prices throughout the MMR.

Premium-quality onions, according to vendors, cost roughly Rs 22 per kg. “The market is not receiving onions of varying quality.” “A large portion of the arrival is wet onions, which will rot quickly, and the cost recovery will be difficult for both wholesalers and retailers,” said the merchant.

Wholesale market rate

Onion prices in wholesale markets have risen from Rs. 2 to Rs. 5 per kilogram. Onions are currently selling for Rs. 18–Rs. 22 per kg at the APMC market, up from a previous price range of Rs. 15–Rs. 18 per kg. Retail markets are considerably more expensive, with onions fetching prices ranging from Rs. 30 to Rs. 35 per kg.

According to Pranav Das, a vegetable vendor from Nerul, the quality of onions is poor, and they cannot even be stored for a week.
