Thane [India], October 24: Residents across several parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region have been affected by a 36-hour water supply shutdown announced by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). The disruption impacts Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli, Badlapur, Ulhasnagar and Taloja, with authorities citing concerns over water availability and the need to manage existing reserves.
The shutdown began at midnight on October 22 and was scheduled to continue until noon on October 24. The interruption is linked to the suspension of water supply from MIDC’s Jambhul Water Treatment Plant, which serves several residential and industrial areas.
Which Areas Are Affected by the Water Cut?
In Thane, the affected areas include Diva, Kalwa, most parts of Mumbra, Rupadevi Pada, Kisan Nagar No. 2, Nehru Nagar and Kolshet Khalcha Gaon. Kalyan-Dombivli, Ulhasnagar and Badlapur are also affected, along with the entire Taloja node.
The impact may vary depending on the local distribution network and the availability of alternative water sources. Residents who depend on MIDC’s supply have been advised to plan their household water use carefully.
Why Has MIDC Announced the Shutdown?
The disruption comes amid concerns over water availability following lower post-monsoon rainfall and the early withdrawal of the monsoon. The possible impact of El Niño conditions has also raised concerns about water reserves for the coming months.
The state government has directed a 10 per cent water allocation cut as part of measures to manage available supplies. MIDC has also introduced a recurring 36-hour weekly shutdown schedule for its supply network.
Low Water Pressure May Continue After Restoration
Even after the scheduled shutdown ends, residents may not immediately receive water at normal pressure. Thane civic authorities have warned that reduced pressure could continue for one to two days after the supply resumes.
The disruption has raised concerns among households already experiencing irregular water supply, particularly in rapidly growing residential areas. Some residents may need to make temporary arrangements to meet essential needs while normal distribution is restored.
Residents Advised to Use Water Carefully
Authorities have urged residents to store sufficient water ahead of scheduled interruptions and avoid unnecessary consumption. Housing societies and businesses that depend on a regular supply have also been advised to plan accordingly.
As weekly shutdowns are expected to continue in affected MIDC-dependent areas, residents should follow announcements from their respective municipal corporations for updated schedules and restoration information. The actual timing of normal supply may vary by locality.
The recurring cuts highlight the challenges of maintaining a reliable water supply across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region as authorities work to manage available reserves and meet the needs of a growing population.
