Apple

We have heard numerous claims about Apple working on the company’s ‘Mixed Reality’ headgear for more than five years, but it has not yet been unveiled. The delay in finalising the device’s design language has been identified as the main cause of the delay.

The company’s industrial design team is extremely concerned about visual aesthetics and wants items to have some quality of distinctiveness so that anyone can easily recognise them as an Apple product, a trait championed by Jony Ive.

According to reports,

Apple’s working MR concept device is currently a little bulky and heavy. As a result, the design team, which now directly reports to COO Jeff Willians (following Ideparture ve’s in 2019), wants more time to refine the device to make it lighter and more comfortable to wear for extended periods of time.

The Financial Times cited two insiders familiar with the company’s decision-making hierarchy when reporting that the senior executives of Apple wanted the device to be ready for delivery this year.

Version 1 of the product is rumoured to resemble ski goggles, be capable of delivering 3D content, and offer animated memoji-like interactivity on FaceTime and other comparable multimedia communication systems.

It is also rumoured to cost over $3000 (around Rs 2,47,000), making it the most costly wearable gadget from the Apple brand, and it is reported to include cameras, motion sensors, and two high-resolution screens. If all goes according to plan, Apple MR headwear will likely make its debut at WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference). Apple might provide resources and tools to developers there so they can create cutting-edge AR/VR applications for the headset, which is most likely to hit shops in late 2023. By then, the Apple App Store will have a sufficient number of apps and games.

Apple’s mixed reality headset has the ability to improve in subsequent versions and may very well become a bigger income producer for Apple by the end of 2030 compared to iPhones, even if it may not initially sell like hotcakes as the iPhones or the Watches did.
