The long-awaited super-specialty hospital project in CBD Belapur, Navi Mumbai, has received a major boost after the Bombay High Court cleared a significant legal hurdle surrounding the proposed development.
The court dismissed a petition challenging the project at Sector 15A, CBD Belapur, effectively clearing the way for the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to move forward with plans for a super-specialty hospital and medical college.
High Court Dismisses Petition Over Sector 15A Land
The petition had been filed by the 40 Plus Master Cricketers Association, Navi Mumbai, which argued that the land had long been used by local residents for sports and recreation.
The association had sought to stop construction and retain the plot as an open playground. Environmental concerns related to CRZ regulations were also raised during the legal challenge.
However, the Bombay High Court observed that the petitioners did not have any legal ownership, right or interest in the land that would allow them to prevent the authorised development from going ahead.
Court Clears Major Legal Obstacle
The verdict was delivered by a division bench headed by Chief Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Gautam Gokhale on August 27.
The court’s decision removes one of the major obstacles that had delayed the ambitious healthcare project in Navi Mumbai. The land, measuring approximately 21,623 square metres, belongs to CIDCO and has been leased for the civic body’s proposed development.
Hospital and Medical College Planned
The Sector 15A project has been planned as a major public healthcare facility for Navi Mumbai.
Earlier plans outlined a large super-specialty hospital with advanced treatment facilities, along with a medical college. Previous reports had indicated a proposed 500-bed hospital project, to be developed in phases, with the larger healthcare infrastructure expected to significantly strengthen public medical services in the city.
The first phase was previously estimated to include a 100-bed facility, while later development would expand the hospital’s capacity and add the medical college.
What About the Existing Playground?
The issue of the existing open ground remains an important part of the public discussion.
Local residents and cricket enthusiasts had opposed the project, arguing that the space had been used for sports and recreational activities for years.
While the High Court has cleared the legal challenge to the hospital project, reports indicate that the demand for an alternative playground for local residents has also been taken into consideration.
Major Step for Navi Mumbai Healthcare
The High Court verdict marks an important development for Navi Mumbai’s public healthcare infrastructure.
Once completed, the super-specialty hospital is expected to provide access to advanced medical treatment for residents of Navi Mumbai and surrounding regions, reducing dependence on major hospitals in Mumbai and other cities.
With the legal hurdle now removed, attention will shift to the next stage of implementation and construction of one of Navi Mumbai’s most significant proposed healthcare projects.
