Thane [India], September 14: The much-awaited Metro connectivity between Ghansoli and Kapurbawdi has moved closer to becoming a reality, with the trial run on the route now completed. Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said passenger services are likely to begin by December 2026, marking a significant step forward for public transport connectivity across the Thane and Navi Mumbai region.

The completion of the trial run is an important milestone because the route is expected to provide commuters with a faster and more convenient alternative to heavily congested roads. Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced the development on September 12, describing the successful trial as welcome news for residents who depend on road transport for daily travel.

For commuters travelling between Navi Mumbai and Thane, improved metro connectivity could make a major difference, particularly during peak hours when routes around Thane, Ghansoli, Airoli and Kapurbawdi experience heavy traffic. The new connectivity is expected to strengthen the wider public transport network and provide passengers with another option besides buses, private vehicles and suburban rail services.

The development comes as work on several Metro corridors in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region reaches crucial stages. Metro Line 5, connecting Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan, has also entered an important testing phase. MMRDA recently began energising the overhead electrical system on the Kapurbawdi–Dhamankar Naka stretch, with safety inspections planned before trial operations.

The broader Metro network is being developed to create better connections between Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and other rapidly growing parts of the metropolitan region. Kapurbawdi is particularly important because it is planned as an interchange point with Metro Line 5, creating opportunities for smoother transfers between different corridors. MMRDA’s project information identifies Kapurbawdi as an interchange location for Metro Line 4 and Line 5.

The expected December start, however, should be treated as a target rather than a confirmed commercial opening date. Metro services generally require several stages of testing, safety checks, inspections and regulatory clearances before passengers can be allowed to travel. The successful trial run is therefore an encouraging development, but the final opening will depend on completion of the remaining formalities.

The new route is expected to be particularly useful for people travelling for work, education and business between Navi Mumbai and Thane. With residential and commercial development continuing across both regions, demand for reliable cross-city public transport has been increasing. A stronger Metro network could also help reduce dependence on private vehicles and ease pressure on major road corridors.

The project is part of a much larger effort to improve mass rapid transit across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Other Metro corridors are simultaneously progressing towards commissioning, with authorities targeting phased openings and network integration over the coming months. The government has previously indicated its objective of bringing major Metro phases into passenger service by the end of 2026.

If the Ghansoli–Kapurbawdi service begins as targeted in December, commuters could see a significant improvement in connectivity between the two rapidly expanding urban regions. The next few months will be crucial as authorities complete inspections and prepare the corridor for regular passenger operations.
