Delhi Cockroach protest

New Delhi [India], October 16: Protesters in Delhi who have been described as the “cockroach” protest movement are preparing to return to the streets on Friday, following a police crackdown that prevented their previous mass demonstration and led to the jailing of two of the movement’s leaders.

According to a BBC News report, police dispersed demonstrators who attempted to gather at alternative locations. There were also reports of protesters being assaulted during the operation. The BBC reported that it captured footage of a police officer slapping a detained protester inside a bus.

The police response has drawn criticism and raised questions about how authorities handled the planned demonstration. The Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms (CJP) reportedly compared the crackdown with measures taken during India’s Emergency from 1975 to 1977, when civil liberties were suspended.

Delhi Police defended their actions, saying the measures were necessary to maintain public order and prevent unauthorised gatherings. The police did not respond to the BBC’s questions about the reported use of violence against protesters.

The report also said that two protest leaders, Dipke, Das and Ranka, were released on Sunday after agreeing to maintain peace and good behaviour. Following the demonstrations, Jantar Mantar was removed from Delhi’s list of approved protest sites. Authorities directed demonstrators to alternative locations, including Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground.

Jantar Mantar has long been an important venue for public demonstrations in the national capital. The historic astronomical observatory, built in the 18th century, is located near Parliament and has become one of Delhi’s most recognisable sites for public dissent.

The planned return of protesters is likely to bring renewed attention to the handling of public demonstrations, the use of police powers and the importance of protecting the right to peaceful assembly. The situation may also prompt further discussion about the balance between maintaining public order and allowing citizens to express dissent.

This report is based on BBC News coverage. Allegations and claims are attributed to the report and relevant parties.
