Hyderabad: In a world where going without a cellphone is less convenient, people have been wasting

hours mindlessly browsing through social media without blinking.

A 30-year-old Hyderabadi woman’s eyesight was destroyed as a result of her daily exposure to

smartphones for 8 to 10 hours.

For the first year and a half, she experienced visual problems with symptoms like seeing floaters, flashes

of lights, black zigzag lines, and instances of blurred vision that recurred multiple times throughout the day.

Every 10-15 minutes, they would repeat and last anywhere from seconds to minutes.

Additionally, whenever she woke up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom,

she would briefly lose all vision.

  • first saw an ophthalmologist, who after a thorough examination of her eyes ruled out any eye disease.
  • then sent to Dr. Sudhir Kumar in order to rule out any neurological causes for her vision-related complaints.

The doctor stated that the results of a thorough clinical neurological examination were normal and

that the patient’s symptoms did not indicate any particular brain nerve-related ailment.
Her decision to leave her position as a beautician one and a half years prior to care for her

son with special needs was discovered after the doctor inquired further about her activities.

She had also started to use her smartphone far too frequently at the time.

She would spend 8 to 10 hours a day staring at the smartphone screen, and 2 hours at night in

complete darkness.

Dr. had a hunch that her vision issues were caused by spending hours staring at a smartphone screen. “Because I’d seen incidents like this before.

I did not start her on any medications or request any investigations.

I gave her advice and suggested that she limit her smartphone use. She agreed to spend less time staring at her smartphone’s screen.

After a month, she came back for a review, and to our delight, all of her vision-related issues had vanished.

She said that she had normal vision. This verified our hunch that she had’smartphone vision syndrome,’ the doctor added.

Why do eyesight problems occur?
The muscles required to move the eyeballs and focus the eyes may become weak or exhausted from overuse.

Occasionally, this could lead to double vision and impair vision sharpness.

Digital screens emit heat. Additionally, people blink their eyes less frequently when staring at a computer screen.

Both of these could increase the likelihood of dry eyes, which might result in other eye-related symptoms such visual blurring.

The lack of sleep that many smartphone users experience has been related to an increase in eye strain and visual problems.

Exactly why do visual problems occur?

Overuse may weaken or tyre the muscles required to move the eyeballs and focus the eyes. Double vision and reduced vision clarity could occasionally arise from this.

A heat source for digital displays. Additionally, individuals blink their eyes less frequently when staring at a computer screen.

The chance of dry eyes, which can result in visual blurring and other eye-related symptoms, can be increased by either of these.

Sleep deprivation has been associated with an increase in eye strain and visual problems, and

it is common among smartphone addicts.

How can I reduce my screen time?

It is impossible to completely avoid using digital screens because much work and school is done on them

as well as leisure and entertainment-related activities.

Therefore, one may consider cutting down on their time spent in front of displays.

Screen time that is not related to work or school should be decreased.

One must keep a sufficient distance from the screen (avoid being too close to the screen),

Avoid using your smartphone in total darkness.

Use the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a break and gaze at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Anyone who notices any problems associated with their vision should see a doctor for a correct diagnosis

and course of action.
