Mumbai | A serious construction-site accident on Mumbai’s Metro Line-4 corridor has triggered swift administrative action after a structural segment from an under-construction viaduct collapsed in Mulund, leading to the death of one person and injuries to several others.
Following the incident, authorities ordered the immediate suspension of MMRDA Executive Engineer Satyajit Salve, while a detailed safety inspection across the Metro Line-4 corridor has been initiated.
The accident occurred on LBS Road in Mulund, where a concrete parapet segment from the elevated Metro structure fell onto vehicles passing below during ongoing construction work. The sudden collapse caused panic in the busy area and led to emergency rescue operations.
According to officials, one person lost their life in the incident while others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has assured that medical expenses for the injured will be covered.
Authorities have taken the matter seriously, launching a technical inquiry to determine the exact cause of the collapse. Construction activity at the affected stretch has been temporarily halted as a precautionary measure.
In addition to the suspension of the engineer, multiple individuals associated with the construction work have been detained for questioning, and penalties have reportedly been imposed on contractors involved in the project.
Officials have also announced a special safety audit of the entire Metro Line-4 corridor, which connects Wadala to Kasarvadavali, to ensure structural stability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Metro Line-4 project is considered a major infrastructure development aimed at improving connectivity across Mumbai’s eastern suburbs. However, the Mulund accident has raised concerns about construction safety standards and monitoring mechanisms at large infrastructure sites.
Government authorities have expressed condolences to the victim’s family and assured strict action against anyone found responsible after the investigation is completed.
For now, the focus remains on safety inspections, accountability, and restoring public confidence in the city’s expanding metro infrastructure.
