PayPal Layoffs in India

PayPal has reportedly laid off around 600 employees across its India operations as the US-based fintech giant continues a major global restructuring and cost-cutting exercise. The job cuts have affected employees in Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, with technology, engineering, operations, payments and finance among the functions impacted.

However, there is a significant difference between the number reported by sources and PayPal’s own figure. While people familiar with the matter told Moneycontrol that around 600 employees were affected, a PayPal spokesperson said the headcount reduction on August 31 was approximately 220 employees, or about 4% of its India workforce.

PayPal India Layoffs Hit Three Major Cities

The reported workforce reduction has affected several key PayPal teams in India.

Employees working in technology, engineering, operations, payments and finance have reportedly been impacted across the company’s offices in Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

PayPal has more than 6,000 employees in India, meaning the reported figure of 600 would represent roughly 10% of its local workforce. The company, however, maintains that the actual number affected in the August 31 reduction was closer to 220.

The difference between the two figures has become one of the key aspects of the latest layoffs.

Employees Say They Received Little or No Warning

Some employees affected by the layoffs described the process as sudden.

According to an employee quoted by Moneycontrol, workers received an invitation to join a call on the morning of August 31. Employees from different PayPal offices across India were reportedly part of the call and were informed that their roles were being eliminated.

The employee said system access was revoked immediately after the call.

Other employees reportedly received direct emails informing them that their employment had ended.

The affected employees were reportedly told about an off-boarding process, job-placement assistance and one month’s salary as severance pay. Some workers said they were still awaiting clarity regarding their full-and-final settlement.

PayPal Says Cuts Are Part of a Multi-Year Transformation

PayPal has described the workforce reduction as part of a previously announced multi-year transformation programme.

The company said the restructuring is intended to simplify its global operations, strengthen execution and position the business for long-term growth.

The latest India layoffs are therefore not being presented as an isolated decision. They form part of a much larger effort to reshape PayPal’s workforce and operating structure globally.

Global Workforce Reduction Could Affect Thousands

Earlier this year, PayPal announced plans to reduce its global workforce by 20% over a two- to three-year period.

PayPal had approximately 23,800 employees worldwide at the end of 2025. A 20% reduction would translate to roughly 4,760 positions if the target is fully implemented.

The company has said the restructuring is expected to generate at least $1.5 billion in gross run-rate savings over the period.

The workforce changes are reportedly being implemented in phases, beginning with the Asia-Pacific region before extending to other parts of the world.

India Remains an Important PayPal Technology Hub

Despite the layoffs, India continues to be an important part of PayPal’s global technology and payments operations.

The company established its first development centre in Chennai in 2008. Its operations in Bengaluru and Hyderabad have also grown around areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, payments, fraud prevention and risk management.

This makes the latest workforce reduction particularly significant for India’s technology sector, where multinational companies have been reassessing staffing levels and operating costs.

PayPal Layoffs Come Amid Wider Tech Job Cuts

PayPal’s restructuring comes during a broader period of workforce reductions across the global technology and fintech industries.

Other major companies have also announced layoffs or restructuring plans in recent months as businesses attempt to reduce costs, simplify organisational structures and redirect investment towards newer technologies.

In India, the latest PayPal cuts follow fresh restructuring announcements from other global technology companies, adding to concerns about employment opportunities in large multinational technology centres.

The role of artificial intelligence is also increasingly being discussed in corporate workforce planning, although PayPal has primarily described its programme in terms of simplifying operations, improving execution and reducing costs, rather than attributing the India layoffs solely to AI.

What Happens Next for PayPal Employees?

The latest round of cuts is unlikely to represent the end of PayPal’s global restructuring.

With the company targeting a 20% workforce reduction over the next two to three years, additional changes could follow as PayPal reviews teams and operations across different regions.

For employees in India, the immediate focus will be on severance, final settlements and job-placement assistance following the August 31 layoffs.

The conflicting figures — around 600 employees according to people familiar with the matter versus approximately 220 according to PayPal — also mean that the exact scale of the latest India workforce reduction remains disputed.

What is clear, however, is that PayPal is undergoing one of its most significant organisational transformations in years, with India among the first major regions to feel the impact.
