Thane [India], October 15: BJP MLA Sanjay Kelkar has raised concerns over alleged illegal constructions and unauthorised hawkers in Thane, submitting a collection of photographic evidence to Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao and seeking action against the reported violations.
According to a report by Loksatta, the complaint highlights around 40 alleged unauthorised constructions and approximately 100 hawker stalls that have come under scrutiny. The submission reportedly includes photographs and supporting material intended to help the civic administration identify the locations and examine the complaints.
Kelkar has called on the Thane Municipal Corporation to take the matter seriously and ensure that complaints about unauthorised structures and roadside encroachments are investigated. The issue has drawn attention to the challenges faced by the city in managing public spaces, enforcing construction regulations and keeping footpaths accessible to pedestrians.
Unauthorised constructions can raise concerns relating to building permissions, land use, public safety and compliance with municipal regulations. Similarly, hawker stalls operating without the required permissions can affect pedestrian movement and traffic, particularly in busy commercial areas.
The submission of photographic evidence is intended to provide the civic administration with specific details for verification. The allegations will need to be examined by the relevant departments, which can determine whether the structures or stalls violate applicable rules and what action may be warranted.
The issue also places the focus on the responsibility of municipal officials to respond to complaints and enforce regulations consistently. Any proposed action would depend on the findings of the civic administration’s inspection and the applicable legal procedures.
The development comes amid continuing public debate over unauthorised development and encroachments in Thane. Residents and commuters have repeatedly raised concerns about the use of public spaces, while the administration faces the challenge of balancing enforcement with the applicable rules governing street vending and construction.
The next steps will depend on the Thane Municipal Corporation’s verification of the evidence and its response to the complaints raised by Kelkar. No enforcement outcome should be assumed until the civic administration confirms the findings and any action taken.
