Chennai [India], September 14: Vishwanath & Sons is the kind of film that tries to balance romance, family emotions, humour and questions about marriage without becoming a conventional love story. Directed by Venky Atluri, the Tamil-Telugu drama stars Suriya, Mamitha Baiju, Radhika Sarathkumar and Raveena Tandon and revolves around a successful man who finds his carefully controlled life disrupted by an unexpected relationship. The film released in theatres on August 14 and has received a generally positive response for its performances and emotional appeal.

At the centre of the story is Sanjay Vishwanath, played by Suriya. He is an accomplished international shooter and a wealthy businessman who has spent much of his life chasing excellence. Despite his professional achievements, his personal life remains incomplete. He is unmarried, and his mother continues to worry about when he will settle down.

Sanjay’s life takes an unexpected turn when he meets Maddy, played by Mamitha Baiju. Their meeting is connected to a deeply personal family situation involving a surrogate baby, but what begins as an unusual circumstance gradually develops into a relationship that forces Sanjay to reconsider many of the decisions he has made throughout his life.

The age difference between the two characters becomes one of the film’s central themes. Rather than treating the relationship simply as a conventional romance, the film spends considerable time looking at the emotional hesitation surrounding it. Sanjay has to confront questions about age, marriage, family expectations and whether it is possible to start over when society has already decided what a person’s life should look like.

Suriya is one of the film’s biggest strengths. He plays Sanjay with a relaxed maturity, avoiding the larger-than-life style often associated with his commercial roles. His character is successful and confident in his professional world but considerably less certain when it comes to emotions and relationships. That contrast gives the performance its charm. Hindustan Times described the film as an imperfect but effective age-gap romance, with Suriya and Mamitha helping the material work.

Mamitha Baiju gets a role that allows her to move between comedy, emotion and vulnerability. Maddy is considerably younger than Sanjay, but the film does not reduce her character to simply being the younger romantic interest. Her presence gradually becomes important to the emotional transformation of the protagonist.

The chemistry between Suriya and Mamitha is another reason the first half works as well as it does. Their conversations and awkward situations provide much of the film’s lighter moments, while the family scenes give the story a warmer tone. NDTV similarly noted that the first half is breezy and engaging, particularly because of the chemistry between the leads and the reactions of the family members around them.

Radhika Sarathkumar also makes an impression as Sanjay’s mother. Her character brings the film closer to the familiar world of Indian family dramas, where parents have strong ideas about marriage, children and what constitutes a settled life. Her interactions with Sanjay provide both humour and emotional grounding.

One of the film’s more interesting ideas is its treatment of legacy. Sanjay has achieved extraordinary things professionally, but the film asks whether professional success is enough to define a person’s life. His journey gradually becomes less about winning competitions or building wealth and more about understanding relationships and personal happiness.

The movie also touches upon parenting, companionship and the emotional baggage people carry from childhood. These themes give Vishwanath & Sons more ambition than a straightforward romantic drama. However, the film does not always explore all of them with equal depth. Some critics felt that the second half takes unnecessary detours and that several of its larger ideas remain on the surface.

That becomes the film’s biggest weakness. The first half establishes the characters and their unusual circumstances with considerable ease, but the later portions become more conventional. The screenplay attempts to address several emotional and social issues at once, and some of those threads could have benefited from more detailed writing.

The film’s 2-hour-41-minute runtime also makes those uneven portions more noticeable. At its best, Vishwanath & Sons is warm, funny and emotionally accessible. When the screenplay becomes overly dramatic, however, the simplicity that makes the first half appealing begins to disappear.

Still, Venky Atluri deserves credit for attempting a slightly different kind of mainstream family entertainer. The film combines an unusual romance with familiar Indian family dynamics and gives its lead actor the opportunity to play a character whose biggest battles are personal rather than physical.

The technical aspects also support the film’s easy-going tone. GV Prakash Kumar’s music has been appreciated by audiences, while the film’s visual presentation maintains the polished look expected from a major Tamil production. Early audience reactions particularly highlighted the performances, dialogues, family emotions and music, even as some viewers felt the second half was less effective.

Commercially, the film has performed strongly. Vishwanath & Sons crossed ₹187 crore worldwide by its second week and went on to become one of Suriya’s biggest successes of 2026. Its theatrical performance also helped establish it as a significant Tamil release of the year.

The film has now also moved towards the OTT audience, with its streaming release arriving while its theatrical run was still continuing. This gives viewers who missed the cinema release another opportunity to experience Suriya and Mamitha Baiju’s unusual family drama.

Ultimately, Vishwanath & Sons is not a flawless film, but it succeeds because of the warmth of its central performances. Suriya brings maturity and restraint to Sanjay, while Mamitha Baiju gives Maddy an energetic and emotionally appealing presence. The movie may not explore every theme as deeply as it promises, but it remains an accessible family drama with an unusual romantic premise.
