Given that he hadn’t played for India’s national team in whites in almost 15 months, the veteran hitter Ajinkya Rahane’s inclusion in the selection for the World Test Championship final came as a big surprise.
A year ago, there was a lot of talk about Rahane playing his “farewell game” against South Africa at Newlands.
But, the person who earlier guided India to a storied Border-Gavaskar Trophy victory in 2020–21 is now back donning the national colours. But what brought Rahane back into the Test team?

But more than simply his performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) contributed to his recall.
The Ranji Trophy continues to be the biggest stage for players to shine when it comes to being chosen for the Test team. Rahane actually did that.
The 34-year-old scored 634 runs in 11 innings for Mumbai in the most recent Ranji season at an astounding average of 57.63.
He hit two hundreds in those 11 innings, including a huge knock of 204 runs. His campaign average was much greater than his 47.12 lifetime First Class average.
