The Maharashtra Cabinet accepted the Maharashtra Backward Class Commission’s recommendation on Tuesday, stating that the Maratha group should be granted 10% quota in government jobs and education since they are a socially and educationally backward class.

On Tuesday, the Maharashtra government will introduce a bill to give Marathas more reservations.

The Commission stated in a report it sent to the Maharashtra government on Friday that Article 342A(3) of the Indian Constitution should designate the Maratha group as such, and that Articles 15(4), 15(5), and 16(4) should provide these classes reservations. Additionally, 84% of Marathas are neither advanced nor wealthy, according to the research.

According to the research, there exists a unique scenario wherein Marathas can receive quota by surpassing the state’s 50% reservation cap. “The Commission has identified exceptional and unusual conditions that justify the allocation of a restricted quota of over 50% to the Maratha community for admission to civil institutions, as well as for public services and positions,” the statement read.

According to the research, it is important and apparent to reserve 10% of public services for the Maratha community and 10% of admissions to educational institutions.
