Aamir Khan’s 2016 release 'Dangal' remains one of Indian cinema’s most successful films, both critically and commercially. Based on the life of Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters, the sports drama captivated audiences across the globe. Aamir Khan’s 2016 release ‘Dangal’ remains one of Indian cinema’s most successful films, both critically and commercially. Based on the life of Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters, the sports drama captivated audiences across the globe. However, in a recent conversation, Aamir revealed that he was initially reluctant to take on the project and even thought Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan might have sent the director to him with the script to end his career.

In an interview with the podcast channel Just Too Filmy, Aamir was asked whether his film choices align with audience expectations. He clarified that he has always followed his instincts rather than catering to trends. He cited examples like ‘Lagaan’, ‘Peepli Live’, and ‘Dangal’ as films he pursued based on personal conviction rather than box-office predictions.

Aamir admitted that while he loved the script of ‘Dangal’, he wasn’t immediately ready to play the role of Mahavir Singh Phogat. He explained that having just completed ‘Dhoom 3’, where he looked much younger and fitter, he hesitated to portray an ageing father with a bulky physique. The ‘Ghajini’ actor even joked that he momentarily suspected the film’s director, Nitesh Tiwari, had been sent by Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan to sabotage his career. “Mujhe laga yeh Salman ya Shah Rukh ke log hain, jo mujhe baahar karna chahte hain,” he shared.

However, Tiwari was adamant about casting only Aamir in the role. When Aamir suggested waiting for 10–15 years, Tiwari surprisingly agreed, stating that he wouldn’t make the film with anyone else. Despite his initial reluctance, Aamir found himself unable to shake off the impact of the story. “The script was so powerful that I couldn’t let it go, even if it meant taking a risk with my career,” he confessed.

‘Dangal’ not only became the biggest Indian blockbuster of 2016 but also set records in China, surpassing the Rs 2,000-crore mark globally. On the work front, Aamir will be seen next in the film, Sitaree Zameen Par. Starring Aamir in the lead, opposite Genelia D’Souza, the film is slated to release on December 25.
