NMMT has inducted the first 30 new CNG buses into its fleet, with 150 buses set to arrive by the end of the year. The move aims to improve public transport across Navi Mumbai, Thane, Panvel and nearby regions.

Thousands of daily commuters in Navi Mumbai can soon expect a smoother and more reliable travel experience as the Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) begins expanding its fleet with new CNG buses. The transport undertaking has already received the first batch of 30 buses, while a total of 150 new CNG buses will be introduced in phases before the end of the year.

The newly inducted buses are currently stationed at the Ghansoli depot and will soon begin operating on various city and intercity routes. Officials have confirmed that another 20 buses are expected to arrive next month, with the remaining vehicles joining the fleet gradually over the coming months.

Major Relief for Daily Commuters

For several months, passengers have been demanding more bus services due to overcrowding and long waiting times on popular routes. The shortage of buses has affected commuters travelling between Navi Mumbai, Mumbai, Thane, Panvel, Uran and nearby areas.

With the addition of 150 new buses, NMMT expects to increase service frequency, reduce waiting time and improve passenger convenience. The expansion is also expected to support the growing number of commuters using public transport every day.

Why NMMT Chose CNG Buses

Instead of significantly expanding its electric bus fleet, NMMT has opted to procure more CNG buses. Officials believe CNG-powered buses offer dependable performance while remaining environmentally friendly.

In recent years, some electric buses reportedly faced operational challenges, including charging issues and occasional breakdowns, which affected service reliability. The new CNG buses are expected to provide a better balance between operational efficiency, lower emissions and dependable public transport services.

Better Connectivity Across the Region

NMMT operates one of the most important public transport networks in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, connecting Navi Mumbai with Mumbai, Thane, Panvel, Uran and Khopoli.

The expanded fleet is expected to improve connectivity across these corridors while helping commuters reach offices, railway stations, educational institutions and commercial hubs more efficiently. As passenger demand continues to rise, the additional buses will play a key role in strengthening the region’s public transport infrastructure.

More Comfortable and Eco-Friendly Travel

The newly purchased buses are equipped to provide a comfortable commuting experience while contributing to lower emissions compared to conventional diesel buses. The initiative also aligns with NMMT’s efforts to modernize its transport services and encourage greater use of public transportation.

Officials believe the phased induction of all 150 buses will significantly improve operational efficiency and help reduce pressure on existing services throughout the year.

What Commuters Can Expect

As additional buses enter service over the next few months, commuters can expect:

  • Reduced waiting time at bus stops
  • Increased frequency on busy routes
  • Improved connectivity across Navi Mumbai and neighbouring cities
  • More reliable and environmentally friendly public transport

The arrival of the first 30 buses marks the beginning of a major fleet expansion that is expected to make daily travel more convenient for lakhs of passengers by the end of the year.
