According to recent reports, many people have started stopping their vehicles along the Kalamboli–JNPT highway stretch just to capture videos of planes taking off and landing. While the view of the runway from this route has become a major attraction, authorities say this behavior is proving to be highly dangerous.
Police officials have confirmed that this stretch has already witnessed multiple serious and even fatal accidents, with at least three deadly incidents reported in recent months. In several cases, drivers either stopped suddenly or got distracted while watching aircraft, leading to collisions.
The situation becomes worse during weekends and evenings, when families and groups gather in large numbers, parking vehicles on the roadside and causing congestion. This not only disrupts traffic flow but also creates hazardous driving conditions for other commuters.
Authorities have repeatedly issued warnings asking people to avoid stopping on highways and risking lives for videos. Despite this, many continue to ignore safety guidelines, turning the area into an accident-prone zone.
To tackle the issue, police have proposed installing a visual barrier (around 6 feet high) along the highway to block the direct view of the runway. This step aims to discourage people from stopping and reduce accident risks. Until then, police deployment has been increased, especially during peak hours, to manage crowds and ensure smoother traffic movement.
Officials have made it clear that the excitement around the airport should not come at the cost of human life. They have urged citizens to prioritize safety and strictly follow traffic rules.
This incident highlights a new challenge in rapidly developing urban areas — where infrastructure growth attracts public curiosity, but lack of discipline can turn it into a safety hazard.
