Mashhad [Iran], September 16: Passengers aboard a Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 experienced a frightening emergency after severe shaking inside the aircraft caused sections of the cabin ceiling to break loose during an emergency landing at Mashhad Airport in Iran. Videos recorded inside the aircraft showed ceiling panels falling into the passenger cabin, exposing parts of the internal structure.
The aircraft was operating a flight from Mashhad to Kermanshah when it reportedly developed a serious technical problem shortly after takeoff. According to reports cited by The Indian Express and Brazilian news outlet UOL, the aircraft lost one of the tyres on its landing gear, prompting the pilots to turn back towards Mashhad and make an emergency landing. The exact sequence of the technical failure has not yet been officially established.
As the aircraft prepared to land, passengers experienced intense vibrations. Footage released by Iranian news agency Akharin Khabar showed sections of the cabin ceiling lining coming down over passengers while parts of the aircraft’s interior structure became visible. The sudden movement caused panic inside the cabin, with passengers seen reacting to the falling panels and shaking aircraft.
Despite the alarming scenes inside the Boeing 737, the aircraft landed safely at Mashhad Airport. According to reports citing Sepehran Airlines spokesman Hassan Jafari, no passengers were injured, and everyone was safely evacuated after the aircraft came to a stop. Passengers were subsequently transferred to another flight to continue their journey to Kermanshah.
The aircraft’s initial problem remains under investigation. Early reports suggested that a tyre may have burst during the takeoff sequence, potentially leading to further mechanical problems and severe vibrations. However, the precise cause had not been officially confirmed at the time of reporting. The runway at Mashhad Airport was temporarily closed for inspection before being reopened later.
The incident has attracted attention because of the dramatic footage from inside the cabin. While the falling ceiling panels created a frightening situation for passengers, the damage appears to have involved the aircraft’s interior lining rather than the main pressure structure of the fuselage. A full technical assessment will be required to determine exactly why the cabin components detached during the emergency landing.
This was also not the first recent incident involving a Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 at Mashhad. On August 25, another Boeing 737-500 operated by the airline, carrying 127 people on a flight from Tehran to Mashhad, reportedly veered off the runway after landing when its nose landing gear collapsed. No injuries were reported in that incident either, and Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization opened an investigation.
The latest episode is therefore likely to face additional scrutiny from aviation authorities as investigators examine the aircraft’s mechanical condition, the reported tyre failure and the chain of events that led to the severe vibrations inside the cabin. Aviation incident database AeroInside has also recorded the September incident as involving severe vibrations at Mashhad.
For the passengers on board, the most significant outcome was that the emergency ended without reported injuries. The dramatic cabin footage, however, has quickly drawn international attention and raised questions about the aircraft’s technical failure and the circumstances that caused parts of the interior ceiling to come loose during landing.
