Navi Mumbai [India], September 21: A massive fire broke out at a furniture and sofa godown in Navi Mumbai’s Digha area on Sunday evening, September 20, sending thick clouds of smoke and flames into the sky and creating panic among residents nearby. The incident took place in the Eshwarnagar area near Mukund Company at around 6:55 pm, according to fire department information cited in local reports.

The fire reportedly spread rapidly after breaking out inside the godown because the premises contained a large quantity of wooden furniture, sofas, foam, mattresses and other combustible materials. Videos showing the intense flames and heavy smoke from the incident have since circulated on social media, drawing attention to the scale of the blaze.

As soon as the fire was reported, fire brigade teams were rushed to the location. Given the intensity of the blaze, additional fire tenders were called in from other fire stations in Navi Mumbai. Firefighters worked from different sides of the premises and used continuous water sprays to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby industrial units and buildings.

Reports indicate that around five to six fire engines were deployed during the firefighting operation. The combustible material stored inside the warehouse made the operation particularly challenging, as flames could spread quickly through wooden furniture, foam and other materials. Firefighters continued their efforts until the blaze was brought under control.

There are differing reports regarding casualties. Some reports citing fire officials said that no deaths were reported, while other reports said that two people were injured or suffered burn injuries in the incident. Further official details about their condition were not immediately available.

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been officially established. Preliminary reports have suggested a possible electrical short circuit, but authorities are expected to determine the actual cause after further investigation. It would therefore be premature to treat the short-circuit theory as confirmed.

A large portion of the material stored inside the godown was reportedly damaged or destroyed in the fire. The full extent of the financial loss has not yet been officially disclosed. The incident has also raised concerns about fire safety arrangements at warehouses where large quantities of combustible furniture, foam and other materials are stored.

The Digha fire comes after a series of fire-related incidents reported in Navi Mumbai in recent days, highlighting the importance of fire-safety precautions in commercial and industrial premises. Authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the blaze and establish whether the warehouse had adequate safety arrangements.

For now, the investigation into the Digha furniture godown fire continues, while officials assess the damage and circumstances that led to the blaze. The viral videos from the scene show the intensity of the fire and the firefighting operation, but the footage itself does not establish how the fire started.
