“93% of Indians lack adequate sleep, although the majority are unaware of this fact or how it affects their daily life.

Your ability to sleep soundly can be improved with a healthy lifestyle and minor behavioural changes “said Dr. Sibasish Dey, ResMe’s Head of Medical Affairs for South Asia
You may have heard the advice to put your phone away before bed or perhaps been given it. But since old habits are hard to break, the majority of us spend hours reading through our social media accounts before falling asleep.
What if, however, we told you that this seemingly innocent behaviour is aggravating other issues and messing with your sleep cycle?
According to the ResMed 2023 Sleep Survey, 40% of Indians claim that using electronic devices or screens right before bed has reduced the quality of their sleep compared to the previous year.
Dr. Sibasish Dey, Head of Medical Affairs, South Asia, ResMed, discussed the subject and noted that there is a connection between nighttime light exposure and interrupted sleep.
We don’t feel drowsy, though, since blue light exposure slows or delays the creation of this hormone. Our inability to fall asleep quickly causes us to wait longer in bed before falling asleep.
Light is the most important factor in synchronising circadian rhythms.
The development of artificial light and technology has increased people’s exposure to light before bed.
Even while all forms of visible light may affect circadian rhythms, blue light has the biggest effect.
He emphasised that even a little check can keep the mind engaged and prevents one from nodding off. “More people are reading, communicating, and having fun with electronic devices, which causes significant sleep loss and sleep problems.
Use of electronic devices before bed can all worsen chronic sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea. Persistent sleep problems can significantly harm a person’s health and wellbeing, causing daytime exhaustion, attention problems, and a higher chance of accidents and injuries, according to him.
*Televisions: TV displays, particularly those that employ LED technology, emit blue light. It may be challenging to get to sleep if you watch TV shortly before bed.
*LED lights: LED lights are becoming more and more common in houses, and if you have them in your bedroom, they may emit blue light that will keep you awake.
*Mobile phones and game consoles: If you use your mobile phone or a gaming console or handheld device late at night, the blue light they create can interfere with your sleep.
