New Delhi — Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that India is set to become completely Atmanirbhar (self-reliant) in manufacturing bullet trains and related high-speed rail infrastructure. According to him, the country has now understood the intricate technology and operations required for high-speed trains, positioning India to build and implement these systems domestically.

Speaking on expanding high-speed rail networks, Vaishnaw highlighted that the government’s plan includes seven new high-speed rail corridors announced in the latest budget, which are expected to spur connectivity and economic growth across the nation. These corridors will link major cities in different regions, reducing travel times and boosting mobility.

Domestic Technology and Manufacturing Push

Vaishnaw emphasized that India has learned and absorbed the complexities of bullet train systems, enabling the use of indigenous technologies for future projects. This includes track works, advanced signalling, station infrastructure and even the manufacture of bullet trains in India itself, marking a significant shift from earlier reliance on foreign technology partners.

In a press briefing, he also noted that one of the major challenges for high-speed rail expansion remains land acquisition, urging state governments to support these efforts, as the wider public “deserves and desires” faster rail connectivity.

What This Means for India’s Rail Future

India’s first high-speed rail project — the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train corridor — has been under construction and uses Japanese Shinkansen technology with Make in India elements. However, the government’s new strategy looks beyond that to build completely Indian-designed and manufactured bullet train systems across future corridors.

This announcement signals a transformative era for Indian Railways, with self-reliant production at the heart of upcoming high-speed rail projects. With improved domestic capabilities, India aims to not only reduce dependence on imported technology but also enhance long-term infrastructure resilience and innovation.
