Navi Mumbai Water cut

Navi Mumbai residents are set to get major relief from the ongoing water restrictions. The 10% water cut imposed across the city will be withdrawn from September 5, following a significant rise in the water level of Morbe Dam after weeks of good rainfall in its catchment area.

The water cut had been in place since May 25, when the city’s water resources came under pressure because of the declining storage in Morbe Dam. With the monsoon bringing substantial rainfall over the past few weeks, the situation has now improved considerably.

Morbe Dam Storage Rises Significantly

According to the latest information, Morbe Dam’s overall water storage has reached 92.93%. The current water level stands at 86.55 metres, against the dam’s maximum level of 88 metres.

The dam currently holds around 177.020 million cubic metres of total water, while the usable water storage is reported at approximately 146.420 million cubic metres, or 76.70%.

The improvement has provided the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation with enough confidence to restore the city’s regular water supply.

10% Water Cut to Be Withdrawn

The 10% reduction was introduced on May 25 as a precautionary measure after Morbe Dam’s storage fell sharply ahead of the monsoon.

During the restriction period, the civic administration also took additional measures, including keeping swimming pools closed and reducing afternoon water supply in the city. Residents were repeatedly asked to use water carefully and avoid unnecessary consumption.

Now, with the reservoir receiving substantial rainfall, the administration has decided to bring the restrictions to an end from September 5, coinciding with Gokulashtami.

More Than 3,000 mm Rainfall Recorded

Rainfall has played a major role in changing Navi Mumbai’s water situation.

Since June 1, the region has recorded around 3,036.6 mm of rainfall, significantly improving the inflow into Morbe Dam. The sustained rainfall over the catchment area has helped the reservoir recover from the low levels recorded earlier in the year.

Earlier in the monsoon season, concerns had grown over Navi Mumbai’s water availability because the reservoir had started the season with considerably lower storage. The administration had therefore been cautious about withdrawing the restrictions too quickly.

Relief for Navi Mumbai Residents

The decision will come as welcome news for households, housing societies, commercial establishments and businesses across Navi Mumbai that have been managing with reduced water availability for several months.

The restoration of normal supply is particularly significant as the city’s population continues to grow and new residential and infrastructure projects increase overall demand for water.

Water Conservation Still Remains Important

Although the 10% water cut is being withdrawn, the improved situation does not mean that water conservation is no longer necessary.

Navi Mumbai’s growing population and increasing water demand make long-term planning important. The civic administration had earlier appealed to residents to use water responsibly while the reservoir levels remained low.

With Morbe Dam now close to its full level, September 5 is expected to mark an important turning point for Navi Mumbai’s water supply situation.
