Tensions flared in Tamil Nadu today as BJP leaders K. Annamalai and Tamilisai Soundararajan were detained by police during a protest at the Tasmac headquarters. The protest was organized in response to the state’s liquor policies, with the BJP demanding the immediate closure of Tasmac outlets due to the social and health issues exacerbated by alcohol consumption.

The BJP has consistently criticized the state government’s reliance on alcohol sales for generating revenue, with party leaders accusing the DMK of using Tasmac to fuel addiction and social unrest. Annamalai, who spearheaded the protest, argued that the government’s over-dependence on Tasmac has led to widespread alcoholism, driving families into poverty and causing significant public health challenges.

Tamilisai Soundararajan echoed these concerns, calling for a policy shift that would prioritize the welfare of the people over alcohol revenues. Despite the peaceful nature of the protest, the police swiftly detained the leaders, leading to widespread condemnation from the opposition. Many BJP members accused the DMK of using the police to suppress free speech and prevent important social issues from being addressed in the public sphere.

The incident has further polarized the political climate in Tamil Nadu, with the BJP promising to continue its campaign for reform in the state’s alcohol policies.
