Thane to Navi Mumbai Airport in Just 30 Mins
Mumbai, March 31, 2025 – As the much-anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) prepares for its grand inauguration in June, authorities are racing against time to ensure seamless connectivity to the new aviation hub. Among the most ambitious projects in the pipeline is a 26-km elevated corridor that promises to slash travel time from Thane to NMIA to just 30-40 minutes, a significant improvement from the current 60-90-minute commute.

The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) are spearheading this infrastructure marvel, which aims to decongest existing routes like the Thane-Belapur Road and Palm Beach Road, notorious for their traffic snarls.

A Game-Changer for Thane Commuters

Currently, travellers from Thane to NMIA have to navigate through the heavily congested Thane-Belapur Road and Palm Beach Road, often leading to frustrating delays. The new elevated corridor, starting from Patni Chowk in Thane, will provide a direct, signal-free route, drastically reducing travel time.

“This project will be a game-changer for Thane residents, offering a smoother and faster connection to the airport,” a CIDCO official told The Indian Express.

The corridor will be constructed in two phases:

  1. Phase 1 (17 km): Patni Chowk (Thane) to Vashi, running parallel to Thane-Belapur Road.
  2. Phase 2 (9 km): A double-decker elevated road from Vashi to NMIA, ensuring seamless connectivity right up to the airport terminal.

Environmental Hurdles and Project Challenges

While the first phase faces fewer environmental concerns, the second phase—spanning from Vashi to NMIA—poses a bigger challenge. The stretch passes through mangrove-rich areas and falls under coastal regulation zones (CRZ), requiring multiple environmental clearances before construction can begin.

The estimated cost of the project is pegged at ₹8,000 crore, with land acquisition and regulatory approvals likely to influence the timeline. “Given the scale of this development, environmental clearances and approvals will be critical in determining the project’s completion,” the official added.

Boosting NMIA’s Connectivity Further

CIDCO has been working on multiple fronts to enhance NMIA’s accessibility. In a major breakthrough on March 25, the forest department approved the transfer of 4,859 square metres of forest land near Ulwe and Sonkhar creeks, paving the way for a crucial bridge over the Ulwe River.

This bridge will replace an existing bund (embankment), improving connectivity between Ulwe and the airport. Additionally, CIDCO is developing new roads, flyovers, and metro links to ensure smooth transit for passengers and cargo.

What This Means for Mumbai’s Commuters

The 26-km elevated corridor is expected to:
✔ Reduce travel time from Thane to NMIA by half (from 60-90 mins to just 30-40 mins).
✔ Decongest Thane-Belapur Road and Palm Beach Road, easing traffic for daily commuters.
✔ Boost economic activity by improving logistics and business travel connectivity.
✔ Enhance last-mile connectivity to NMIA, making it a more attractive alternative to Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).

Looking Ahead

With NMIA set to become operational soon, infrastructure development in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is at an all-time high. The Thane-NMIA elevated corridor is just one of several projects aimed at transforming the region’s transport landscape.

However, challenges remain—particularly in securing environmental clearances and ensuring timely execution. If completed as planned, this corridor could revolutionize travel for lakhs of commuters and set a new benchmark for urban infrastructure in India.
