Ulhasnagar [India], September 16: A 28-year-old highly educated woman died by suicide at her residence in Ulhasnagar, with her family alleging that persistent harassment over dowry and domestic issues pushed her to take the extreme step. Police have registered a case against her husband, mother-in-law and grandmother-in-law, and her husband has been arrested in connection with the case.

The deceased has been identified as Nitya Rai, who was married to software engineer Gaurav Rai around five years ago. According to reports, Nitya was also highly educated. The couple had a nine-month-old daughter, who has now been left without her mother.

According to the complaint filed by Nitya’s father, her family had provided cash and other items at the time of the marriage. Despite this, he alleged that Nitya was repeatedly pressured to bring additional money from her parental home after the marriage. The family has also alleged that she faced physical and mental harassment over household matters.

The allegations reportedly extend to Nitya’s mother-in-law and grandmother-in-law. Her father told police that the situation became particularly difficult after Nitya gave birth to a daughter in December 2025. According to the complaint, she was allegedly subjected to taunts and pressure after the birth of the child. These allegations are now part of the police investigation.

Nitya’s family has also described a distressing final communication. According to her father’s account, she contacted him on the night of the incident and asked him to come and take her home. He allegedly tried to speak to members of her matrimonial family before learning that his daughter had died. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the death and the allegations made by the family.

Following the complaint, Ulhasnagar’s Central Police Station registered a case against Nitya’s husband, mother-in-law and grandmother-in-law on allegations including abetment of suicide and harassment. Police arrested the husband, while the investigation into the role of the other accused is continuing.

The case has drawn attention because both Nitya and her husband were reportedly well educated, yet the family alleges that disputes over money and domestic matters continued inside the marriage. The death has also left their infant daughter without her mother, adding to the emotional impact on the family.

At this stage, the allegations made by Nitya’s relatives have not been established in court. The police investigation will have to determine whether the alleged harassment occurred and whether it had a legally established connection with her death. Statements from family members, evidence collected from the residence and other available material will be important to the investigation.

The incident has once again brought attention to complaints involving alleged dowry demands and domestic harassment in Maharashtra. Authorities routinely advise families facing such harassment to approach the police or appropriate support services rather than allowing the situation to remain unreported.

For now, the Ulhasnagar police investigation remains underway, with the arrested husband facing the legal process. The court will ultimately determine the allegations and responsibility based on the evidence presented.
