Navi Mumbai [India], October 28: The long-delayed Airoli-Ghansoli flyover project in Navi Mumbai has reached 65% completion, raising hopes of improved connectivity and reduced traffic congestion for daily commuters. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is aiming to complete the project within the next year, although the original deadline has already passed.
With an estimated cost of around ₹650 crore, the project is expected to provide an alternative route along the busy Thane-Belapur Road and improve connectivity between Airoli, Ghansoli and surrounding areas.
A 3.5-Kilometre Connectivity Project
The proposed corridor stretches approximately 3.5 kilometres, including around 2.5 kilometres of elevated road. Once operational, it is expected to improve traffic movement between Airoli and Ghansoli while strengthening links with the extended Palm Beach Road network.
The project is particularly important for commuters travelling through Navi Mumbai’s residential, commercial and industrial areas, where traffic congestion frequently affects daily journeys.
Project Delayed for More Than Two Decades
The flyover was initially proposed in 2003-04 under the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), but the project remained stalled for years due to various challenges.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation subsequently took the project forward. The tendering process was completed in 2024, and the contractor received the work order in March that year.
According to the latest progress update, most of the bridge pillars are nearing completion. However, the original construction timeline has expired, and the civic body is now targeting completion within the coming year.
Traffic Congestion Could Ease on Thane-Belapur Road
The flyover is expected to reduce pressure on the heavily used Thane-Belapur Road, a key route connecting residential neighbourhoods, industrial areas and commercial hubs.
Civic estimates suggest that around 30% to 40% of traffic could shift to alternative routes after the project becomes operational. Commuters may potentially save 30 to 40 minutes on certain journeys, although the actual benefit will depend on traffic patterns and the completion of connecting roads.
The improved network could also make journeys towards Thane and Navi Mumbai International Airport more convenient.
Palm Beach Road Extension to Improve Regional Connectivity
The project is expected to complement the extension of Palm Beach Road towards Airoli, creating additional travel options for motorists moving between Navi Mumbai and neighbouring urban centres.
Better integration with other planned and ongoing infrastructure projects could further improve connectivity towards Thane and other parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
However, the full benefits will depend on the timely completion of approach roads, effective traffic management and the availability of seamless connections to the wider road network.
When Will the Airoli-Ghansoli Flyover Open?
With 65% of the work completed, the Airoli-Ghansoli flyover has made progress after years of delays. The NMMC is targeting completion within the next year, but an exact opening date has not been confirmed.
Once completed, the project is expected to offer commuters another important route through Navi Mumbai and help ease congestion on some of the region’s busiest roads.
