According to officials, the fraudsters used fear tactics, claiming that the victim’s bank account was linked to illegal activities. In panic, the elderly person transferred a significant amount of money to the provided account. Later, upon realizing the fraud, the matter was reported to the local cybercrime police.

Police Advisory

Authorities have once again issued a stern warning to citizens, urging them not to trust unsolicited calls from unknown numbers. They emphasized:

  • No police or government agency ever demands money over the phone.
  • Threats of digital arrest are purely scams.
  • In case of suspicious calls, citizens should immediately hang up and report to the cyber helpline (1930) or the nearest police station.

Growing Concerns in Mumbai

Cyber scams have been on the rise across Mumbai and nearby regions. Elderly citizens are often targeted due to their limited familiarity with digital fraud tactics. Cyber police are conducting awareness drives in housing societies, urging families to educate senior members about safe online practices.
