Jofre Mateu, a former Barcelona player, believes Luka Modric and Toni Kroos can still help Real Madrid.

Over the years, Real Madrid has benefited greatly from the talents of German master Toni Kroos and Croatian genius Luka Modric.

Real Madrid has won three La Liga championships and four UEFA Champions League championships with Modric and Kroos at the centre of their midfield, with three of those victories coming back-to-back from 2016 to 2018. The form of Modric (37) and Kroos (33) has clearly declined over the past several seasons, albeit they aren’t getting any younger.

Former Barcelona player Jofre Mateu believes that Modric and Kroos can still perform well for the 14-time champions as Real Madrid prepares for their Champions League quarterfinal first-leg match against Chelsea.

“This ageing player discussion first began in Madrid three years ago. They have since won two league championships and a Champions League. They are in a transition, that’s why. Kroos and Modric are unable to play the whole 90 minutes. But, both have a stake in it and have demonstrated their ability to play.

Havertz, who has served as a substitute striker for Chelsea this season, failed to record a shot last Saturday as Chelsea lost 0-1 against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.

Mateu supported the German to lead the line when questioned if Chelsea should switch out Havertz up top for Joao Felix, who is on loan from Atletico Madrid. Mateu argued that Felix will be more successful as a playmaker to support his assertion.

Mateu, who rose through the ranks at the La Masia academy in Barcelona, has confidence in Havertz to succeed.

“Maybe yes! You look for other answers when your efforts provide no results. Nonetheless, I believe Havertz to be in charge. I can offer you some numbers for Joao Felix, but I think of him more as an offensive midfielder than a forward. He has the ability to score, but he lacks the production of other elite attackers. Hence, in my opinion.
