Mumbai [India], October 13: The proposed shift of some international flights from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to Navi Mumbai International Airport has been postponed by a few weeks, giving airlines and airport authorities additional time to resolve concerns over the transition. Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) has informed airlines about the delay as discussions continue over a revised plan linked to the redevelopment of Mumbai airport’s Terminal 1.
The earlier proposal involved relocating or rationalising around 265 weekly international departure slots, representing roughly one-third of the international services operating from Mumbai airport. The changes were planned to begin on October 25, but the proposed timeline faced objections from airlines over operational feasibility, costs and the need for clearer consultations.
Why Has the Mumbai Airport Flight Shift Been Delayed?
The decision follows discussions between the Ministry of Civil Aviation, airport operators and airline representatives. During a meeting held on October 6, the ministry asked the airport operator to defer the existing transition plan and work towards an arrangement agreed upon by the stakeholders.
Airlines had raised concerns about moving a substantial number of international services within a short period. They sought greater clarity on the redevelopment schedule, terminal capacity and the operational impact of shifting flights to another airport. The revised plan is expected to take these concerns into account before the transition moves forward.
The latest postponement does not mean that the proposed shift has been cancelled. Instead, the existing timeline has been deferred while further discussions take place. A new implementation date will depend on the outcome of consultations and the required approvals.
How Is Terminal 1 Redevelopment Linked to the Plan?
Mumbai airport’s Terminal 1 currently handles domestic passenger operations, while international flights operate from Terminal 2. The planned redevelopment of Terminal 1 is expected to require changes to passenger movement and terminal operations.
According to the airport operator’s proposal, some international services would move to Navi Mumbai to create additional capacity at Mumbai airport as domestic traffic is reorganised during the redevelopment. The shift is therefore part of a wider plan to manage airport capacity across the Mumbai metropolitan region.
However, airlines have questioned the proposed scale and timing of the transition. Airport authorities and carriers now need to work towards a practical arrangement that supports redevelopment without creating unnecessary disruption to existing services.
What Does the Delay Mean for Air Travellers?
For passengers with upcoming international bookings from Mumbai, the immediate priority is to check the departure airport mentioned on their ticket and monitor official airline communications. The postponement means the earlier October 25 timeline will not proceed as originally planned, but the final schedule for any future transfer remains subject to further decisions.
Travellers should not assume that their flight will automatically move to Navi Mumbai. Any confirmed changes to the airport, departure time or flight arrangements should be communicated by the airline. Passengers travelling close to the eventual transition date should verify their flight details before leaving for the airport.
The development is particularly relevant for passengers who may need to plan ground transport, airport transfers and arrival times. Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports are separate facilities, so any confirmed change in departure location could affect travel time and arrangements.
Revised Timeline Awaits Further Discussions
The coming discussions between MIAL, Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd, airlines and aviation authorities will be important in determining how the transition proceeds. The objective is to establish a workable plan that balances the redevelopment needs of Mumbai airport with the operational requirements of airlines.
For now, the proposed relocation of international flights remains deferred rather than cancelled. Until a revised timeline is formally announced, passengers should rely on updates from their airlines and official airport channels for the latest information.
