Mumbai News, April 4, 2025 – A violent storm with strong winds and dust lashed Thane, Mumbra, Kalyan, Dombivli, and Navi Mumbai on Friday night, disrupting life and inspiring weather advisories from officials. Witness videos posted by residents revealed dense clouds of dust covering the skyline, followed by heavy rain and strong gusts.
The storm, which began in Kalyan, quickly set off for Ulhasnagar and was predicted to hit parts of Mumbai. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) released a nowcast alert at 4:25 PM, which warned the public of thunderstorms, lightning, and winds of 30-40 km/h in the hours to come.
Storm Brings Chaos to Thane, Kalyan & Navi Mumbai
Witnesses described abrupt darkness as powerful gusts knocked over trees, brought traffic to a halt, and produced minor damage to structures in some locations. Videos on social media depicted dense dust storms lowering visibility, with cars slowing on highways and pedestrians running for shelter.
Local officials in Thane and Navi Mumbai asked people to remain indoors if possible. Some areas experienced power cuts, and emergency response squads were sent out to remove branches and debris that had fallen on the roads.
IMD Issues Heatwave Alert for Mumbai
The storm arrives at the same time as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a heatwave warning for Mumbai and its surrounding areas. The IMD had predicted hot and humid weather from April 5 to April 8, with temperatures set to soar.
In an X (formerly Twitter) post, the IMD said:
“Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and light to moderate rain are likely at isolated places in Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada districts with winds gusting up to 30-40 kmph.”

Mumbai’s Air Quality & Weather Forecast
Despite the storm, Mumbai’s Air Quality Index (AQI) remained at 90, which is considered “satisfactory.” However, sensitive individuals, especially those with respiratory conditions, were advised to take precautions.
The meteorological department had forecast a temperature of between 27°C and 34°C, humidity levels of approximately 61%. There were slight relieving west winds at a speed of 19 km/h but also aggravating the conditions for the dust storm.
Precautionary Steps Suggested
– Refrain from unnecessary traveling until the storm settles.
– Evade trees and unstable structures.
– Have emergency provisions ready in the event of power cuts.
– Drink plenty of water during the increasing temperatures.
As the storm approaches Mumbai, officials are keeping a close watch. More information will follow as the weather evolves.
Residents Share Harrowing Experiences
Several residents took to social media to share their experiences of the sudden storm. Priya Sharma, a resident of Kalyan, said, “The sky turned dark within minutes, and the winds were so strong that our windows started rattling. We could barely see outside due to the dust.” Another local from Thane, Rohan Patil, added, “The storm uprooted a tree near our building, and it barely missed parked cars. It was terrifying.”
Transport Disruptions Reported
The storm caused temporary disruptions in local train services between Thane and Kalyan, with delays reported due to debris on tracks. Autorickshaws and cabs operated cautiously, while BEST buses in Mumbai were advised to slow down in affected areas. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) stated that the Metro services remained unaffected but urged passengers to check for updates.
Emergency Response Teams on Alert
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local fire brigade teams were put on standby in case of emergencies. Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani assured citizens that all necessary measures were being taken. “Our teams are monitoring the situation closely. Citizens should follow BMC advisories and avoid panic,” he said.
What’s Next?
The IMD predicts scattered rain and thunderstorms over the weekend, providing slight relief from the heatwave. However, strong winds may persist, and citizens are advised to stay updated via official weather bulletins.
