7.7-Magnitude Quake Strikes
New Delhi: A massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit central Myanmar on Friday around 12:50 PM (local time), and it was followed by a major aftershock of 6.8 magnitude. The epicenter of the earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), was 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing city at a depth of 10 kilometers. Though there have been no reports of any casualties yet, the earthquake has caused shockwaves in the region, and there is panic and disruption.

Seismic Effect and Local Tremors

The earthquake was experienced in several countries, with tremors in northern Thailand and China’s Yunnan province. In Thailand, the capital city of Bangkok felt noticeable tremors, which led to a temporary halt of metro and rail operations. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra summoned an emergency meeting to evaluate the situation and coordinate relief response measures.

At the same time, China’s Earthquake Networks Center registered the earthquake in Yunnan province at a magnitude of 7.9, a little more than USGS estimates. The shaking was strong enough to raise alarm among residents and officials, although no serious damage or injuries have so far been reported in these bordering nations.

Public Panic and Infrastructure Shaking

When the earthquake hit, shocking videos appeared on social media websites, depicting buildings shaking visibly in Bangkok and other cities. Residents and pedestrians scurried onto the streets in panic, worried about aftershocks or building collapses.

A resident of Chiang Mai, a tourist hub in Thailand, recount to AFP: “I heard it. I was in the house sleeping and then I ran as fast as I could in my pyjamas out of the building.” Scenarepeated in some areas of Myanmar, with individuals fleeing homes and racing to open grounds as a precaution.

No Tsunami Danger, But Precaution Taken

After the quake, seismologists studied the seismic activity and established that there was no issuance of a tsunami warning. Since the depth was not deep within the ocean, the risk was reduced for triggering a tsunami when compared to seismics with an epicentre under the ocean. Local administrators and emergency workers are still placed on high vigilance for some additional seismic events.

Myanmar’s Earthquake Vulnerability

Myanmar is located within the seismically active region called the Alpine-Himalayan Belt, so it is prone to recurring earthquakes. The nation has seen its share of catastrophic quakes in the past, such as a 6.8-magnitude earthquake in 2016 that left major historical landmarks in Bagan badly damaged. Due to this precedent, officials exercise vigilance in determining structural damage and maintaining safety in quake-stricken areas.

Response Efforts and Safety Precautions

Though there have been no reports of immediate casualties, response teams have been deployed to determine the effect. Myanmar authorities are inspecting buildings, bridges, and infrastructure to guarantee safety. Residents are instructed to be alert and ready for possible aftershocks.

Adjoining nations like Thailand and China have also increased vigilance over seismic activity. Disaster management agencies of Thailand are strictly reviewing any danger to infrastructure, and China’s earthquake authorities continue to monitor the situation in Yunnan province.

International Focus on the Seismic Event

The earthquake made international headlines, with geologists and experts debating the implications of the event. The USGS and other geological institutions are tracking aftershocks and secondary seismic activity in the area. International humanitarian agencies are ready to respond if necessary.

As Myanmar and surrounding nations heal from this strong earthquake, officials are on the lookout to avoid any additional damage. The incident is a reminder of the region’s susceptibility to earthquakes and the need for readiness in reducing the effects of natural disasters.
