Thailand After Devastating Earthquake

New Delhi, 28 March, 2025 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday expressed serious distress over the intense earthquake that occurred in Myanmar and Thailand, bringing about extensive destruction and loss of life. Through a tweet on X (ex-Twitter), PM Modi made it clear that India is willing to offer any kind of aid to the victim countries.

The earthquake of 7.7 on the Richter scale hit central Myanmar at 12:50 PM (local time), with its epicenter in Sagaing at a depth of 16 kilometers northwest at 10 kilometers, said the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Another large aftershock of 6.8 hit shortly afterwards, adding to the devastation. Tremors were also experienced throughout the region in some Indian cities like Kolkata and Imphal, although no damage was reported in India.

Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch…

PM Modi Promises Support, MEA on Standby
PM Modi, in his statement, expressed condolences and prayers for the safety of the affected.

“Concerned about the situation following the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and well-being of all. India is prepared to provide all available help. In this context, requested our authorities to remain on standby. Also requested the MEA to keep in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand,” he posted.

The Office of the Prime Minister has asked the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to liaise with the authorities in Myanmar and Thailand to determine the immediate requirements. India’s disaster response forces, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have been alerted to be deployed, if needed.

Widespread Damage Reports in Myanmar and Thailand
Early reports show massive structural damage across Myanmar’s Sagaing region with buildings crumbling and roads splitting open. Rescue teams are working in the area but remote villages continue to be inaccessible due to landslides as well as ruptured communication networks.

In Thailand, the tremors were very pronounced in Bangkok, where a popular video caught on camera an unfinished skyscraper building in the Chatuchak area collapsing. There are reports of at least 43 workers buried under the wreckage, with rescue teams working round the clock to salvage survivors. The authorities have not officially released the number of fatalities yet, but the stakes are mounting with increasing numbers of buildings reported destroyed.

India’s History of Humanitarian Assistance in the Region
India has a long-standing tradition of providing humanitarian assistance to its neighboring countries in times of natural calamities. In 2015, India initiated Operation Maitri to help Nepal following a devastating earthquake, sending in rescue groups as well as medical assistance. Likewise, when the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake occurred, India dispatched relief supplies and search-and-rescue teams.

In light of its strategic and cultural relationship with Myanmar and Thailand, India’s offer of support reflects its dedication to regional solidarity. Both countries are principal partners in India’s Act East Policy, which focuses on connectivity, trade, and disaster resilience in Southeast Asia.

International Response and Coordination
The United Nations and international organizations are watching the situation closely. Although there is no tsunami alert, coastal areas are on the lookout. Myanmar, with political unrest already facing the country, has further hurdles in rallying disaster response mechanisms.

The government of Thailand has declared emergency procedures, with Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin calling citizens to remain cautious about aftershocks. Bangkok hospitals have been put on red alert to prepare for possible casualties.

What Help Could India Extend?
If asked for, India stands ready to provide:

Search and Rescue Teams: NDRF experts skilled in responding to earthquakes.

Medical Assistance: Emergency medical personnel and equipment.

Relief Commodities: Relief food, water, and shelter.

Technical Assistance: Geological and structural evaluation teams to assess building safety.

A Global Call for Solidarity
As rescue operations continue, the need for international cooperation becomes increasingly critical. PM Modi’s swift response highlights India’s role as a responsible regional leader, ready to assist neighbors in times of crisis.

The coming hours will be crucial in determining the full extent of the damage. For now, the focus remains on saving lives and providing immediate relief to those affected.
