Google declares the discontinuation of certain Nest products. What you must know

For those who are already using these items, the tech giant has guaranteed credits and discounts.

Google made the announcement that it will stop supporting some of its home products, including Nest Secure, Dropcam, and Works, in a blog post on Friday. Here is what it implies for you if you possess one.

Google’s alarm system, dubbed Nest Secure, featured the Nest Guard, Nest Detect, Nest Tag, and interacted with the Nest app. The system first went into operation in 2017 and was shut down just three years later, in October 2020.

Support for Nest Secure will stop on April 8, 2024, and it won’t be available through the app anymore. Users will still be able to utilise all of the capabilities available now until that time, although Google advises doing so sooner rather than later.

According to the blog post, Google is giving current customers the option of receiving an exclusive offer for a Self Setup System from ADT, which may be worth up to $485, or $200 to use on the Google Store to aid a seamless transition.

The Dropcam, Google’s Wi-Fi video-streaming camera that predates the Nest, has a considerably longer history; it was introduced by Google about ten years ago. Google admits that it is difficult to keep up with the early hardware, thus on April 8, 2024, support will end.

The Dropcam will continue to work up to that point, but users won’t be able to use it after that since it won’t operate and won’t be available on the app. Google urges users to download their video history before that date if they wish to save it.

Instead, Google is promoting its Nest Cam with this occasion.

A new indoor wired Nest Cam will be provided without charge to Nest Aware users. The same Nest Cam will be discounted by 50% for additional Dropcam users.

As of September 29, 2023, Google will also discontinue Works with Nest, a service that allowed users to link their own goods to Nest gadgets. According to Google, the links will cease to function and users won’t have access to them after that date.
