Myanmar-Bangkok Earthquake Live: Myanmar, Thailand Earthquake Live Updates: Death Toll Reaches 1,002; Rescue Efforts Increase

A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit northwest of Sagaing in central Myanmar on Friday, causing shockwaves throughout the region and widespread destruction in Myanmar and neighboring Thailand. The death toll has now risen to 1,002, with 2,376 injured, as per Myanmar’s ruling junta. In Thailand, officials have made an urgent appeal for international aid as at least 50 people are trapped under a collapsed high-rise building in Bangkok.

Massive Destruction Across Myanmar
The shallow earthquake, which struck at a depth of just 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), amplified its destructive power, toppling buildings, triggering landslides, and severing communication lines in multiple regions. The worst-hit areas include Sagaing, Mandalay, and Yangon, where hospitals are overwhelmed with casualties.

Videos and photos from the affected zones show collapsed homes, cracked roads, and terrified residents fleeing into open spaces as aftershocks continued throughout the night. Myanmar’s military government has declared a state of emergency in several regions, with rescue teams struggling to reach remote villages due to damaged infrastructure.

Thailand in Crisis: Bangkok High-Rise Collapse Traps Dozens

The tremors were strongly felt in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and other northern Thai cities, where buildings swayed violently, prompting mass evacuations. The most severe incident occurred in Bangkok’s central business district, where a 10-story commercial building crumbled, trapping at least 50 workers and shoppers under the rubble.

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has called for international aid, including specialized search-and-rescue teams and heavy machinery, to assist in the ongoing operation.

“We are doing everything possible to save those still trapped, but we need advanced equipment and expertise from abroad,” a senior Thai disaster official said.

Regional and Global Response

Several countries, including India, China, Japan, and the United States, have offered assistance. India’s National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has dispatched a team, while China’s earthquake emergency response team is on standby. The United Nations has also pledged support, coordinating with local agencies to provide medical aid and shelter for displaced families.

Aftershocks and Tsunami Warnings

Following the initial quake, multiple aftershocks—some as strong as 5.5 magnitude—have kept residents on edge. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially issued an alert for coastal regions, but it was later lifted after no significant waves were detected.

Survivors Recount Horror

“The ground shook so violently that I couldn’t stand. Within seconds, buildings around me started collapsing,” said Kyaw Min, a resident of Mandalay.

In Bangkok, eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as emergency workers pulled survivors from the debris.

“We heard a loud crack, and then the entire structure came down. People were screaming for help,” said Somchai, a street vendor near the collapsed building.

What’s Next?

With thousands homeless and critical infrastructure damaged, recovery efforts will be long and arduous. Meteorologists warn that rains forecasted in the coming days could further complicate rescue missions and increase the risk of landslides.

How to Help

International aid organizations, including the Red Cross and UNICEF, are mobilizing relief efforts. Donations can be made through their official channels to support medical supplies, food, and temporary shelters.
