Nerul Railway Station Navi Mumbai: In a significant move to decongest and streamline the area around Nerul Railway Station, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) conducted a major anti-encroachment drive, removing unauthorized hawkers and illegally parked vehicles. The operation, carried out in coordination with local authorities, aims to improve pedestrian movement and enhance commuter safety in one of Navi Mumbai’s busiest transit hubs.

Drive Targets Illegal Hawkers and Vehicles

According to officials, the crackdown was initiated following numerous complaints from daily commuters about obstruction caused by unauthorized vendors and haphazardly parked vehicles near the station premises. The drive saw CIDCO’s enforcement team, along with local police and municipal staff, clearing makeshift stalls, confiscating goods, and towing away vehicles that were occupying footpaths and roads illegally.

A senior CIDCO official stated, “The area around Nerul Railway Station has been facing severe congestion due to unauthorized hawkers and vehicles, causing inconvenience to pedestrians and motorists alike. This drive is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure better urban management and public convenience.”

Public Response Mixed

While regular commuters welcomed the move, some local vendors expressed frustration over the sudden removal of their livelihood sources. “We understand the need for order, but the authorities should provide us with an alternative space to do business,” said a street vendor who had been operating near the station for years.

Commuters, however, highlighted the long-standing issues caused by encroachments. “The footpaths were completely blocked, forcing pedestrians to walk on the road, which is dangerous,” said Ramesh Patel, a daily commuter. “This drive was much needed.”

Authorities Vow Sustained Action

CIDCO officials emphasized that the drive is not a one-time measure but part of a broader plan to ensure systematic urban development. “We will continue periodic inspections to prevent re-encroachment. Our goal is to make public spaces more accessible and safer for everyone,” the official added.

Similar anti-encroachment operations have been carried out in other parts of Navi Mumbai, including Vashi and Belapur, as part of CIDCO’s commitment to maintaining orderly urban spaces.

What’s Next?

The authorities are also considering designating official vending zones to accommodate street vendors without disrupting pedestrian movement. A proposal for regulated hawking spaces is under review, which could provide a balanced solution for both vendors and commuters.

For now, the focus remains on ensuring that the cleared areas remain free from encroachments, with increased vigilance by civic teams. Commuters and residents hope that the drive will lead to long-term improvements in the station’s accessibility and overall infrastructure.

CIDCO has also appealed to the public to report any illegal hawking, loitering, or unauthorized stocking of goods by shopkeepers in and around railway stations through their official website: www.cidco.maharashtra.gov.in
