Thane: Following a silent protest by residents of Mulla Baug in Manpada opposing the alleged last-minute change in the alignment of the Thane-Borivali tunnel road project, The MMRDA organized a meeting with residents in the presence of Thane MP Naresh Mhaske, Thane police held on Saturday. The residents claimed that the revised route threatens the area’s tranquillity and green cover.
The residents said that they are not against the Thane-Borivali tunnel project, but they raised demands that the tunnel should be extended to Mulla Baug, located in Uni Abex Company, that the toll plaza should be moved forward, and that trimming the trees should be stopped.
Naresh Mhaske suggested the residents of every society to form a group or committee, raise issues, and present them to the officers of the MMRDA. The work on the Thane-Borivali tunnel started last month. The route of the tunnel will be built beneath the hills of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.Mhaske further added that the MMRDA will plant trees at their own expense if the residents are provided with space in the society.
The residents stated that the road will be narrow in their society if the tunnel exit would be here. Therefore they demanded that tunnel be extended till mulla Baug located in Uniabex Company. The toll plaza should be moved, and halting the trimming of the trees until the all demand is fulfilled.
Latika Bhanushali, a resident, told FPJ that the concerned officer of MMRDA did not resolve the issue in meeting despite stating to the residents to form a committee regarding the issues. The meeting of the MMRDA has not resulted in any solutions. However, we are not against this project. We demand that tunnel be extended to Mulla Baug; otherwise, the road is very congested and narrow near our society on both sides of the road. The MMRDA officials did not respond to these issues and did not inform us about the next meeting regarding these issues.
Mhaske warned the contractor to follow the norms provided for noise pollution and air pollution; otherwise, stringent action will be taken. The residents complained about the noise and dust pollution caused by the concerned contractor during the work.
Hundreds of residents from places like Neelkanth Green, Veroton, Cosmos Society, Neelkanth Society, Neelkanth Woods and Satyashankar Society participated in it.
An official from MMRDA, stated that the tunnel work has been extended by 92 meters as per the demand of the residents. However, 2,500 meters of green belt have been destroyed, but 5,300 meters of green belt will be developed in two phases above the tunnel. According to MMRDA officials, they will be meeting with the residents once they form a group to discuss and take their suggestions regarding the issue. We will focus on these suggestions technically.
